What nobody realised until now, is what a megastar the US Vogue editor is in Japan.
According to Women's Wear Daily, during Saturday's Tokyo walkabout on the Fashion's Night Out beat, Wintour sparked the kind of reaction not seen since the Beatles touched down there in 1966: "Hordes of passersby in the Omotesando and Aoyama shopping districts clustered outside each store Wintour entered. They strained their necks to try and catch a glimpse of her. They called out her name and even followed her down the street when she and her daughter, Bee Shaffer, decided to walk between stores they visited".
Wintour was leading a 17-strong Vogue editor assault on Tokyo to help boost sales and morale in the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami which struck Japan earlier this year.
Other notables in town to lend support were designers Roberto Cavalli, Burberry's Christopher Bailey and Michael Kors; stylist Nicola Formichetti and Oscar winning actress and singer Jennifer Hudson, who sang And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going at Kors's after-party held at the U.S. ambassador's residence.
Meh, been there, heard that. What the crowd really wanted was to see Anna Wintour pounding rice cake paste with a giant wooden hammer at the Theory store. Money can't buy.
